The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art: Jain Shrine Panel

June 17, 2014 in Projects

3 Axis inc was commissioned by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in 2014. We were tasked ┬áto create a replica ceiling panel for a Jain Shrine, which was under restoration in their conservation lab. Utilizing a 3D laser scanner, 3 Axis scanned portions of the shrine, using the preexisting patterns as templates. The scanned data was reassembled, sculpted, and refined digitally to create a new pattern. The pattern was carved into a Medex panel using a small (.0625″ diameter) bit with the CNC machine. These complicated hand carvings were quite a challenge but ultimately the panel turned out beautiful.

The Nelson Jain exhibit is running through May 29, 2016.
